STORIES FOR SOCIETY - BERÄTTELSER FÖR SAMHÄLLET
A creative method for helping kids to learn and communicate

During six to eight sessions children and teachers/our facilitators develop a story in a mythical place where anything is possible, no one is excluded and where all involved are concerned with the well-being of the whole. Children create environments, characters and happenings within a framework and theme developed by Stories for Society in co-operation with the school.

The climax of this process usually occurs when children can show one another their developed stories through dramatization and in bound form. When the process is complete children have the possibility of reflecting on the story that they have created and its relevance for their own lives.

The basic process in the classroom includes:

  • Needs analysis and theme identification with the head of school, teachers and other personnel;
  • 6x1.5-hour classroom sessions including exploration of theme, story-telling, presentation of stories through, for example, dramatization;
  • Connection of story-telling outcomes to real life by answering questions in relation to the stories created;
  • A monitoring process that continues throughout the project in co-operation with teachers, parents and the children;
  • Summary and interpretation of results for the teacher and head of school.

Our process builds on childrens' strengths. We also want schools to feel that they are fulfilling their goals through our engagement. In order to ensure this we have created an in-built monitoring process which starts with a baseline analysis that allows for a qualitative assessment of impact as the project progresses.

Our goal is to open up the possibility for children to:

  • Increase their engagement, motivation and participation in learning;
  • Dare to think differently;
  • Develop their sense of empathy;
  • Increase self-confidence by realizing skills and strengths, and grasping the opportunity to make a difference;
  • Learn to take responsibility for a process, debate, argue and simultaneously reach a consensus for the good of the whole;
  • Develop their capacity to express emotions, thoughts and questions in various ways in a safe environment.
